Full plot (contains spoilers)
Tova Sullivan, a lonely widow working as a night janitor at a Washington aquarium, forms a bond with Marcellus, a wise octopus who longs for freedom. After an injury forces Tova to take leave, she is replaced by Cameron Cassmore, a struggling musician. The two form a bond while caring for Marcellus. Cameron discovers a ring with the initials 'EELS' and a photo of his mother, leading him to a man named Simon Brinks. Simon reveals he was his mother's friend, not her lover. Distraught, Cameron throws the ring into the aquarium, where Marcellus retrieves it. Tova eventually realizes Marcellus wants to return to the sea to die and helps him escape. Tova then reveals to Cameron that 'EELS' stood for her son Erik, who was actually Cameron's father. They find peace in their shared connection. After Tova decides to stay in her home, Cameron moves in with her. They find a hidden box confirming that Erik knew of Cameron's existence before his death.
