The story
In 1991, a young girl named Ally Craig witnesses her mother being fatally shot in a New York subway station. Ten years later, Ally is a student at NYU living in Queens with her father, an NYPD detective. Tyler Hawkins, a student at NYU who works at the Strand Bookstore, becomes involved in a fight and is arrested by Ally's father. After his friend Aidan suggests a plan to get revenge on the detective, Tyler and Ally begin seeing each other. As their relationship develops, they begin to share personal secrets about their pasts, while Tyler struggles with the strained relationship he has with his workaholic father.

Following the initial meeting, Ally and Tyler's relationship deepens as they share secrets about their respective family tragedies. Tyler's brother, Michael, committed suicide, while Ally's mother was killed in a subway shooting. The narrative follows their growing bond and the complications arising from their family dynamics, including Tyler's strained relationship with his wealthy father, Charles, and Ally's relationship with her detective father, Neil. The story takes a dramatic turn when Tyler's actions lead to a confrontation with his father and a realization of the depth of his feelings for Ally. The film culminates in a tragic twist involving the events of September 11, 2001. It is revealed that Tyler was killed in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, and the film ends with a montage of his friends and family moving forward with their lives while honoring his memory.
