Full plot (contains spoilers)
Kenna Rowan is released from prison after serving six years for the vehicular manslaughter of her boyfriend, Scotty Landry. She moves back to her hometown to find her five-year-old daughter, Diem, who was raised by Scotty's parents, Grace and Patrick. Kenna meets Ledger Ward, Scotty's former best friend and a local bar owner. While the family initially bars her from seeing Diem due to the trauma of Scotty's death, Kenna and Ledger grow closer. After Kenna reveals the truth of the accident—that she was trying to save Scotty but was overwhelmed by guilt—and Ledger shares her diary with the parents, Grace and Patrick have a change of heart. The film concludes with Kenna and Ledger taking Diem to the site of the accident to reinstate a memorial, and the family finally reuniting for dinner.
