A shy telephone enthusiast is called up for a reserve exercise that his fellow soldiers treat as a chance to relax.
The story
Timid Helge Jonsson, who lives with his overprotective mother and is fascinated by telephones, is called up for a reserve exercise at his old regiment. There he reunites with the men from his former light cable-laying vehicle unit and their group leader, Larsson. While Larsson wants the group to perform well, the others regard the exercise mainly as an opportunity to relax, see their friends, and take time away from work. Bea, a journalist writing a weekly-magazine feature, accompanies the exercise undercover as a canteen attendant and becomes smitten with the shy Jonsson. Once the manoeuvres begin, the exercise quickly becomes chaotic.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Helge Jonsson is a timid man who lives with his overprotective mother, and whose greatest interest is telephones. Jonsson is called up for a reserve exercise at his old regiment. There he meets his old army buddies from the light cable-laying vehicle unit: Lövgren, Tallroth, “Gurkan” Gustafsson, Öberg, and their group leader, Larsson. Larsson is keen for the group to do well, but the rest of the men do not take the exercise very seriously. They see it mostly as a chance to relax, enjoy one another’s company, and get time off work. Bea, a female journalist, accompanies the exercise to write a feature for a weekly magazine, posing as a canteen attendant, and becomes smitten with the shy Jonsson. Out in the field, the manoeuvres quickly descend into sheer chaos, and Lövgren and Tallroth decide that the group should end the exercise by visiting a town hotel for dinner and dancing.
