A young woman uncovers family secrets spanning generations, amid a convent’s hidden role in the Resistance.

The story

In 1970, in Carpentras, young Lucie visits Mother Madeleine, who is nearing the end of her life and reveals that she is Lucie’s great-grandmother. Madeleine’s story reaches back to 1900, when, barely 17 and pregnant, she is separated from her child by her parents and sent to a convent. In 1944, her secret son Armand is a doctor and mayor near that convent. As he shows leniency toward Vichy militiamen and German occupiers, Madeleine hides Jewish children among the girls attending the convent school. Solange, the mayor’s hard-of-hearing daughter, asks to attend classes there after realizing that the convent helps the Resistance.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1970, in Carpentras, Mother Madeleine, nearing the end of her life, is visited by young Lucie, to whom she reveals grave family secrets. She tells Lucie that she is her great-grandmother. In 1900, when Madeleine is barely 17, she becomes pregnant, but her parents take the child away from her, arrange for the child to be adopted by a family, and send her to a convent. The child’s father dies during the First World War. In 1944, at the end of the Second World War, Armand, Mother Madeleine’s secret son, has become a doctor and mayor of a small town near the convent run by the nun. He shows too much leniency toward the Vichy militiamen and the German occupiers, while Madeleine, for her part, hides Jewish children in her convent among the deaf and mute girls who attend school there. To her parents’ dismay, Solange, the mayor’s daughter, who is herself hard of hearing, asks to attend classes at the convent, having realized that it helps the Resistance.
