The story
Till and his friends Tamara and Toto are scraping by as interns when their hopes of landing permanent positions are dashed. Till responds by starting a company with them, using contentious methods to help interns gain status and better positions. His success attracts the attention of Magnum, a representative of the rich and powerful who wants to buy the company, and the friends disagree over what to do. Then Sydelia, Till’s childhood sweetheart and a left-wing activist, arrives from France. She opposes the use of unpaid interns and wants to organize a nationwide strike, while Till is focused on business and remains resentful of demonstrations after being taken to them as a child.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The opportunistic yuppie Till, like his friends Tamara and Toto, is scraping by as an intern. When their hopes of getting permanent positions are dashed, Till comes up with an unusual business idea and starts his own company with Tamara and Toto. Using contentious methods, the company helps interns gain greater status, respect, and a better position. Till is soon named Young Entrepreneur of the Year. But his success does not bring him friends alone. Suddenly, the mysterious Magnum appears, a representative of the rich and powerful, to buy Till’s new company. The three friends fall out over the best way to proceed. The situation is further complicated by Sydelia, Till’s childhood sweetheart, who is half French and a left-wing activist. She has come all the way from France and wants to support her childhood friend Till. While Till has just become head of his own consultancy for interns, discovering a lucrative gap in the market, Sydelia has a very different view of the use of unpaid interns in business. The determined activist wants to organize an uprising of interns: a nationwide general strike. With a French revolutionary spirit, plenty of energy, and the motto “Résiste!”, she tries to free Till from the capitalist world and win him over to her side. But the young entrepreneur cares only about turnover, not revolution. Till has long since had enough of demonstrations and revolutions because of his childhood experiences. As a child, he was constantly taken to demonstrations by his parents, something he still resents. So at first, Till and Sydelia each fight for their own values, but over time they also grow closer personally. When the business world, with Magnum’s help, tries to take over Till’s company, only a counterattack will do: an interns’ general strike that brings all of Germany to a standstill.
