Full plot (contains spoilers)
Pitschi has a well-paid job at a brewery in Bamberg, enjoys going for drinks with his old buddies, and has a pretty girlfriend named Sabine. But at work, he isn’t taken seriously, and his friends have become tame under the influence of their wives. After eight years together, Sabine wants to build a house with him and start a family. Pitschi can’t imagine doing that. At his best friend’s wedding, he gets drunk. In his drunken state, he promises Sabine that he’ll father a child with her during their holiday in Mallorca. Sober again, he regrets making that promise. At the airport, he panics and stages a violent robbery against himself, claiming that his money and papers have been stolen, so he can’t fly to Mallorca. He sends Sabine to Mallorca alone with his friends. As soon as the plane is in the air, Pitschi books a flight to Buenos Aires, where he hopes to make a fresh start. On board, he writes Sabine a heartfelt goodbye letter, but at first he doesn’t send it. When he arrives in Buenos Aires, Pitschi looks for a furnished room. His landlord speaks only Spanish and keeps all sorts of animals in his apartment. He recommends that Pitschi take a Spanish course at a private institute, which Pitschi starts the next day. He is very taken with Luna, the attractive Spanish teacher, and lies to his girlfriend on the phone about where he is. Luna and Pitschi begin an affair, so Pitschi now sends the letter to Sabine. Pitschi is introduced to Luna’s wealthy friends and is offered a place in her stylish apartment for 1,500 US dollars a month. He only belatedly notices that every item of furniture in Luna’s apartment bears a pawnbroker’s ticket. Suddenly, he begins to long for Sabine, abandons his life in Buenos Aires, and flies home. Sabine, who has also returned from Mallorca, receives Pitschi’s letter while he is in the bathroom. Shocked, she rushes out of the apartment and writes a goodbye letter of her own. At first, she seems unwilling to change her mind. Only when Pitschi takes her to a plot of land he has reserved, where he has symbolically set up their future house, does she reconcile with him.
