The story

In 1961, 11-year-old Beverly "Bev" Donofrio lives in Wallingford, Connecticut. The film follows her journey as she navigates the challenges of being a young mother, wife, and student. After a pivotal encounter in 1965 leads to an unplanned pregnancy, Bev faces the reality of early motherhood while attempting to pursue her dreams of becoming a writer. In 1961, 11-year-old Beverly "Bev" Donofrio is a girl with dreams of becoming a writer. In 1965, after a party, she becomes pregnant by a man named Ray. She marries him quickly to appease her parents, while her friend Fay also becomes pregnant. The girls face the reality of early motherhood, and Bev struggles to balance her education with raising her son, Jason. Over the years, her relationship with Ray deteriorates as he becomes a heroin addict. In 1986, Bev, now holding a degree, seeks Ray's signature for her memoir. During a final confrontation, her son Jason accuses her of being a neglectful mother. Ultimately, they reconcile, and Bev realizes the depth of her sacrifices while Jason acknowledges his mother's efforts, ending with them sharing a moment of connection as they drive toward a new beginning.
