A scientist's life is upended by a calculated conspiracy that leads to years of trauma and a protracted legal battle for exoneration.
The story
Framed through a contemporary interview, the film follows the life of Nambi Narayanan, an aerospace scientist. It begins with his early days at the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station, where he saves A. P. J. Abdul Kalam from a laboratory injury. After pursuing a master's degree at Princeton University, Nambi returns to India to advance the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Despite securing significant equipment, his research faces hurdles following the death of his mentor. Nambi then negotiates complex international deals to secure technological access for India's space program, leading to the development of the 'VIKAS' engine.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film follows Nambi Narayanan, an ISRO scientist, whose career is marked by significant achievements and a devastating false accusation. After studying at Princeton and returning to India, Nambi works to advance the nation's space capabilities. He successfully negotiates with the French to develop the 'VIKAS' engine and later manages to smuggle four cryogenic engines from the collapsing USSR to bypass US sanctions. However, in 1994, Nambi is arrested on manufactured charges of treason. He is severely tortured by local authorities to extract a false confession. Media outlets falsely claim he was involved in a honeytrap to sell secrets to Pakistan. A CBI investigation eventually reveals the scandal was a conspiracy by external parties to cripple India's missile program. Though exonerated by the Supreme Court years later, Nambi's family remains traumatized. The film concludes with Nambi returning to ISRO to contribute to the Mangalyaan mission and receiving the Padma Bhushan in 2019.
