Full plot (contains spoilers)
At the center of the story is Jürgen Stoll, a piano tuner and free spirit from East Germany who is exposed as a marriage swindler in 1983. In court, he is given the choice between a prison sentence in East Germany and working as a “Romeo agent” for the Stasi in West Germany. Stoll chooses the West, hoping to escape the Stasi’s control. His first target is Jutta Seelandt, a committed secretary at a ministry in Bonn. During a staged encounter, the two fall in love. Jutta believes that Jürgen is fighting for peace and, out of conviction, passes secret information on to him. When the Stasi wants to call off the mission, Jürgen and Jutta try to flee together, but they are caught at the border because the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) has already been informed. They both end up in prison and are not released until after reunification. They meet again in Berlin and jointly plan revenge on the former Stasi employees who took the best years of their lives from them. To do so, Jürgen has to slip into a role once more and comes close to losing Jutta again. In the end, however, the two find their way back to each other, and there is a happy ending.
