Two very different college freshmen navigate the complexities of shared living and personal secrets in a comedy of errors.

The story

The film follows two college freshmen, Devon and Celeste, who become roommates at Walton University. Devon is an introverted student seeking to reinvent herself, while Celeste is her confident and outgoing counterpart. As they navigate the challenges of dormitory life, their initial friendship begins to strain under the weight of personal secrets and differing lifestyles. The narrative is framed as a story told by the Dean of Student Life to two modern-day roommates who are facing similar interpersonal conflicts, creating a layered look at the complications of shared living and the consequences of hidden truths.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Devon and Celeste are roommates at Walton University. Their friendship sours as Celeste's behavior becomes passive-aggressive, leading them to seek help from Dean Robyn Schilling. The Dean recounts their history to current students. The story follows Devon's growing frustration with Celeste's lies about her wealthy background and her involvement with Michael, a student. Tensions peak during a party and a trip to Panama City. After a series of escalating conflicts, including a stolen identity and a physical confrontation, Devon eventually burns Celeste's belongings, accidentally setting the dorm on fire. The Dean's story concludes by revealing the fallout: Celeste was exposed as a fraud and faced legal and financial consequences, while Devon was sentenced to prison for arson but eventually found success in a new career. The film ends with the Dean's story concluding as the current roommates find common ground.
