After her father leaves his company to his last wife, Lilly takes a job there and discovers a half-century-old unanswered letter.

The story

After her father’s death, Lilly Parker travels to Cornwall expecting to inherit his company, but discovers that his last wife, Nora, has inherited it instead. Although Lilly is promised a million pounds and lifelong use of the house, she is offered only an ordinary job rather than the leadership role she expected. The reason emerges when she learns her father had a paternity test done, leaving her shaken by the possibility that he was not her biological father. Lilly accepts the offered position and joins the company’s advice service. There, she and a colleague find a letter that was overlooked, unopened and unanswered for 50 years. Lilly sets out to find its author, Grace Turner, and learn which of the two men in the letter Grace chose.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After her father’s death, Lilly Parker travels to Cornwall expecting to inherit his company and money. But shortly before he died, her father had his will changed, leaving the company to his last wife, Nora. Lilly is to be compensated with, among other things, a million pounds and the right to live in the house for the rest of her life, but she cannot understand why she is being offered only an ordinary job at her father’s company rather than its leadership. The reason soon comes to light: her father had a paternity test done, for which Nora had hired a disreputable company. Lilly is deeply shaken to learn that the man she had believed was her father her whole life may not have been. She decides to join the company, now owned by her stepmother, in the position offered to her. The department is an advice service where people can write in about their troubles and receive replies. Every letter is answered, and some letters have to be gradually scanned into the computer system. Lilly and a colleague come across a letter that was overlooked 50 years ago, never opened, and therefore never answered. Lilly wants to track down its author, Grace Turner, who now lives in New York, and find out which of the two men described in her letter she chose. Grace travels to Cornwall with her grandson Nicholas. Together, they want to find David Trewyn, whom Grace had to leave for another man, now deceased, but whom she still thinks about often. After some difficulties, Grace, who has a heart condition, finds David, who is now paralyzed, and the two get back together. Lilly leaves her almost-fiancé Eric, expecting to see Nicholas again soon after he has left. Eric now gets together with Lilly’s stepmother Nora; they had known each other since they were young. Lilly leaves the company after Nora finds in the mail the follow-up paternity test Lilly had commissioned and offers her the top position in the company, promising to step down. A year later, Grace and David, who have fallen in love again after 50 years apart, get married, and the wedding gives Lilly the chance to finally get together with Nicholas—a chance they both take. Nora is pregnant by Eric.
