A young curate sent to Cornwall falls for an architect whose impending wedding puts her convictions and feelings at odds.
The story
After unlawfully marrying two women, young Anglican curate Rebecca “Becky” Taylor is transferred to Cornwall as punishment. There she meets architect Adam Morris, and despite their awkward first encounter over a stolen bicycle, she quickly falls for him. Adam is overseeing a community-center project funded by wealthy widow Lady Charlotte Biningham. Becky’s care for others soon draws her to Kylie, a young woman who has run away from home. Becky then discovers that Adam is already expected to marry Charlotte’s daughter Emma—and that she herself may be called upon to conduct the wedding. Emma’s confidences and Becky’s growing closeness with Adam leave the curate facing a difficult moral and personal conflict.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After young curate Rebecca Taylor, who belongs to the Anglican Communion, unlawfully marries two women, she is transferred to Cornwall as a punishment. Barely has she arrived when she meets architect Adam Morris on the street and falls head over heels in love with him, even though their first encounter begins with a misunderstanding over a stolen bicycle. Morris is overseeing the construction of a new community center, a project funded by Lady Charlotte Biningham. She is the wealthy widow of an architect who was knighted and died in a fatal car accident a year earlier. Besides her duties as a curate, Rebecca Taylor, known as Becky, likes to look after others. In this case, she takes care of young Kylie, who could no longer stand living at home and ran away. Although Adam Morris holds Becky partly responsible for the loss of his bicycle, he is delighted when he runs into her again. But when Becky learns that Adam is already spoken for and that she is even supposed to marry him to Emma Binningham, Charlotte Binningham’s daughter, she distances herself from him—especially after Emma tells her that she hopes to get a wedding date soon. Shortly afterward, Emma tells the curate about a premarital fling with her childhood friend Ben Lockwood, putting Becky in a moral quandary. She cannot and will not grant Emma the absolution she expects. By now, a closeness has developed between Adam and Becky that has not escaped Emma’s notice either. When the two share a kiss, Becky nevertheless pulls herself together and falsely tells Adam that she is not interested in him. The wedding date is then set, and it looks very much as though Becky will have to marry the man she loves to someone else. When she asks whether anyone has anything against the marriage and should speak now or forever hold their peace, Kylie unexpectedly speaks up, setting off a chain of events that brings together the people who love each other but have not yet had the courage to admit their true feelings. And so Becky and Adam get together, while Emma finally admits to herself that she loves Ben.
