Full plot (contains spoilers)
Children’s book author Caroline Page lives at the family’s country estate with her relatives Paul and George, who took her in more than fifteen years ago after her parents died in an accident. When Caroline comes to the aid of young William during a horseback ride, she has no idea that he is the son of the great love of her life, Leo Walton. After the death of his wife, Susan, Leo spends his holiday in his native Cornwall with his son, staying with his sister Pamela. Pamela would like her brother to leave William with her and her husband. She lost her own son to a ruptured appendix and blames herself in part for the child’s death. At a book launch combined with a summer fête, Caroline meets Leo again. Nearly ten years have passed since she last saw him; back then, he left for America to pursue his career. They soon realize that their long-suppressed feelings for each other have not faded. Caroline, however, finds it difficult to trust Leo again, since he left without a word of explanation all those years ago. To make matters worse, Leo’s sister Pamela is anything but pleased about her brother’s rekindled relationship with Caroline, as she sees it jeopardizing her plans for William. She therefore tries by every means to sabotage their relationship and does not even shy away from spreading lies. When a serious problem arises at Leo’s hotel chain in Seattle and he has to rush back, Pamela uses the situation to her advantage. Caroline believes Leo has left her a second time without a word and reacts accordingly. William informs his father, who immediately returns and assures Caroline of his love. Shortly afterward, he shows his little family their new home, “Carrington Castle,” the castle he and Caroline had dreamed of as children. mini|Highcliffe Castle, seen from the south, is “Carrington Castle” in the film and one of its filming locations. mini|Old Harry Rocks, seen repeatedly in the film.
