When her benefactor’s monthly check stops arriving, Annemarie travels to Germany to find him and investigate her mother’s unsolved murder.
The story
Annemarie Meier-Wippertal has lived apart from her mother’s past: Rosemarie Nitribitt, a well-known high-class prostitute, was murdered nearly twenty years earlier, and her killer was never found. Annemarie’s father is unknown, and an anonymous benefactor has financed her life, including her stay at a Swiss boarding school. When the monthly check fails to arrive, she goes to Germany to seek the benefactor. She also sets out to find her mother’s killer herself and take revenge on those she considers partly responsible. Having studied journalism, she hopes to work in the field and wants to make money without becoming a prostitute.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Annemarie’s mother, Rosemarie Nitribitt, a well-known high-class prostitute, was found murdered nearly twenty years ago. The killer was never found. Annemarie’s father is also unknown. Until now, she had lived under the name Annemarie Meier-Wippertal, unburdened by her mother’s past. An anonymous benefactor had financed her life up to that point, including her stay at a Swiss boarding school. One day, the monthly check fails to arrive. Annemarie then goes to Germany to look for her mysterious benefactor. She also wants to try to find her mother’s killer on her own. And she wants revenge: on everyone in society whom she considers partly responsible for her mother’s death. Every man seems suspicious to her, and she uses the charms of her well-proportioned body to achieve her aims. Without prostituting herself, she wants to make money quickly. Since she studied journalism, she also wants to work in that profession. Attempts by government agencies to recruit her as an agent fail. Eventually, the other side also takes an interest in her and tries to recruit her as a terrorist. But she has no talent for that, either. The economic elite and political high-flyers of the Bonn Republic are alarmed; Annemarie’s activities do not go unnoticed by the powerful men, and apparently make some of the polished representatives of the leadership elite break into a sweat. Meanwhile, Annemarie has fallen in love with an agent, but resists her feelings because she deeply distrusts love itself. Finally, she ends up stark naked as Loreley on the rock of the same name, wrapped in the “fog of forgetfulness.”
