The story

A dancer fleeing her father’s manipulation tries to build an independent life in Vienna under an assumed name.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Evelyn Hoover, daughter of American travel-agency entrepreneur John P. Hoover and great-grandniece of the famous Viennese dancer Fanny Elßler, is herself a professional dancer. However, without her knowledge, her wealthy father bribes the critics and the audience—giving the former free tickets and the latter money. After overhearing a conversation about her supposedly mediocre talent, Evelyn discovers her father’s manipulation. She then flees to Vienna with a tour group organized by her father’s company. She hopes to build a career as a dancer there, like her famous relative before her. The Vienna office of the Hoover corporation is informed by headquarters that the boss’s daughter has run away. But the local manager, Mr. Burian, fails to realize in time that Evelyn is hiding among the guests under the false name Peggy Meyer. Evelyn meets Peter, a Viennese policeman who falls in love with her and gets her a job as a waitress at Mr. Muckenhuber’s café. He earns extra money by finding work for artists, including Peter, who works part-time as a singer. Evelyn’s disappearance increasingly worries her father. Since Burian cannot find her, he sets off for Vienna himself. By this time, Evelyn has fallen in love with Peter, who shows her the most beautiful sides of Vienna. However, he has learned that an impostor named Peggy Meyer is wanted by Interpol and fears that his Peggy is the person they are looking for.
