A passionate inventor’s attempt to sell his robot turns into a vacation-bound tangle of mistaken identities, swapped suitcases, and a valuable lottery ticket.

The story

Rudi Carnel earns a living writing short stories, though his real passion is invention. He has built a universal robot and hopes to present it to the head of the International Electric Company, but meets the deputy, Sebastian Hill, instead. After a parking-space dispute leaves Sebastian ill-disposed toward him, Sebastian’s secretary Andrea suggests Rudi follow them to their vacation destination and try again there. A mistaken identity complicates matters: Sebastian thinks baby-clothing salesman Friedrich Schiller is the inventor. When Rudi and Friedrich’s suitcases are switched, Rudi ends up with baby clothes while the suitcase he left behind contains a valuable lottery ticket. Rudi, his friend Chris, and his niece Anita head to the same resort, setting off a scramble to recover the right luggage.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Rudi Carnel makes ends meet by writing short stories, but in reality he is a passionate inventor. He has developed a universal robot that he wants to show the head of the large International Electric Company, but only the head’s deputy, Sebastian Hill, is there. Rudi has just stolen the parking space right out from under Sebastian’s nose, so Sebastian is not exactly well-disposed toward him. Sebastian’s secretary, Andrea, advises Rudi to follow her and Sebastian to Seekirchen in Carinthia, on Lake Wörthersee, and approach Sebastian about his invention there, since he is always more easygoing on vacation. Meanwhile, Sebastian believes that the baby-clothing salesman Friedrich Schiller is the inventor Rudi. In the end, the suitcases get mixed up, and Rudi takes Friedrich’s suitcase of baby clothes home with him. This is all the more tragic because Rudi’s suitcase—which Friedrich takes home—contains a lottery ticket worth half a million marks if cashed in. Rudi had been holding the ticket for safekeeping at the request of his sister Olga. Since Friedrich is also going on vacation to Seekirchen with his eternally dissatisfied wife, Luise, Rudi, his friend Chris, and Rudi’s niece Anita are forced to go there too. After a few detours, the three find out that Friedrich is their neighbor at the campsite. He noticed the suitcase swap long ago. Through a series of coincidences, Rudi’s robot ends up with Sebastian Hill. Rudi’s suitcase, meanwhile, is stolen by the criminals Oskar and Balduin. They put a bomb in it and take it to the Schlosshotel in Seekirchen. Balduin has found the lottery ticket in the suitcase and kept it for himself. Anita and her gang catch Balduin with a lasso and tie him to a tree. After a lot of back and forth, the suitcase passes through Rudi and Friedrich’s hands and gets mixed up with other suitcases several times before it returns to Balduin and explodes right in front of him. Everyone, including Olga, who has by then come to Seekirchen herself, believes the lottery ticket was destroyed in the explosion, but Anita had taken it for herself long before. Several happy endings follow: Chris had fallen in love with Doris, the receptionist at the Schlosshotel, and the two end up together after the supposed rival, Hansi, turns out to be Doris’s brother. Rudi is able to sell Sebastian his robot because Sebastian’s superior, Joop Gering, is actually Rudi’s best friend. Finally, Rudi and Sebastian’s secretary, Andrea, become a couple.
