A brusque, solitary tile-shop owner, newly told he has little time to live, sets his affairs in order and moves into a hospice.

The story

Lothar Kellermann, a divorced tile-shop owner who keeps people at a distance, shares a close bond with his dog, Bosco. After seeking help for skin problems, he is told he has an aggressive lymphoma and little time to live. He begins arranging his affairs: he sells his home and business, ensures his employees will be retained by the new owner, gives Bosco to an animal shelter, and donates his fortune to it. Lothar then moves into a hospice, where he feels surprisingly at home. He befriends Rosa, another terminally ill resident, and receives a visit from his estranged daughter Mira, who wants to discuss his final arrangements.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Lothar Kellermann is 49 years old and divorced. He owns a tile shop and treats his employees with little appreciation. He is not a people person. His only real companion is his dog, Bosco, with whom he has formed a loving bond. When he goes to the doctor about skin problems, he receives devastating news: he has a particularly aggressive form of lymphoma and does not have long to live. He begins taking care of all the necessary arrangements. He sells his house and his business, making sure his employees are taken on by the new owner. He gives his dog to an animal shelter and donates his entire fortune to it. He himself moves into a hospice for the rest of his life, where he actually feels quite at home. There, Lothar meets Rosa, who has terminal breast cancer, and he even becomes friends with her, unlike most people. His daughter Mira, whom he has not been in contact with for years, visits him to discuss his final arrangements. But shortly afterward, the correct diagnosis comes in: he does not have cancer, but a skin condition that is difficult to diagnose and harmless overall. This is a real problem for Lothar: he now has no money or house, his dog Bosco is gone, and he is no longer allowed to stay at the hospice. Mira takes him in temporarily, but he immediately falls out with her and is forced to sleep in his former shop. He thinks little of Mira’s boyfriend, Ansgar: he is boring, has no backbone, and lacks a personal philosophy about his work. Lothar also falls out with his former employee Manfred, who had even written a eulogy for him at Lothar’s request. Lothar is fed up with life, but at the last second he is stopped from taking his own life. Lothar moves in with Mira again and tries to get his life back on track and make better use of it from then on. He becomes an employee at the tile shop that used to be his and rents a small apartment in a large prefabricated apartment block. Whenever he visits Rosa at the hospice, he brings her his favorite tiles, and they share a few more happy moments together in the time they have left. When Mira breaks up with Ansgar, Lothar looks after him and even tries to get the two of them back together. Lothar continues making changes in his life and, in the end, frees Bosco from the garden of his new owner.
