The story
In 1882 Wyoming Territory, 13-year-old Lucas Hollister cares for his younger brother after their parents die from illness. After Lucas is sentenced to hang for an accidental killing, he is broken out of jail by his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust. The two begin a journey south toward the Mexican border. As they travel through the New Mexico Territory, they must evade two pursuing parties: U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and his posse, and a group of bounty hunters, including the unstable Fenton "Preacher" Lang. They also encounter a group of Kiowa, whom Lucas manages to pacify by trading a valuable rifle for a horse.

In 1882 Wyoming Territory, 13-year-old Lucas Hollister cares for his younger brother Jacob after their parents die of illness. After Lucas is sentenced to hang for an accidental killing, his estranged grandfather, the outlaw Harland Rust, breaks him out of jail. The pair flees toward the Mexican border through the New Mexico Territory. They are pursued by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm and a group of bounty hunters, including the unstable Fenton "Preacher" Lang. After a deadly shootout between the pursuers, Harland and Lucas escape, but are cornered by Lang. Harland is mortally wounded but saves Helm's life by gunning down Lang. Helm, who has lost his own son, allows Lucas to go free while taking Harland in. Helm lies to other marshals, claiming Lucas died. Harland dies on the way to the gallows, and his body is hanged. Lucas eventually reaches Mexico with the help of Harland's friend Anselmo, where he is reunited with his brother, Jacob.
