Full plot (contains spoilers)
On the island of Lesbos, Sappho falls in love with Phaon, an officer in the king’s guards and the leader of the revolt against Melanchrus. Attis, consumed by jealousy, reports Phaon’s presence in the temple to Hyperbius. Phaon is sent into exile in Thrace, while Sappho, to avoid marrying Hyperbius, takes refuge with her priestess pupils in the thiasos, that is, the Temple of Aphrodite. During the journey, Phaon is caught in a storm and swept into Poseidon’s underwater kingdom. Aphrodite’s intervention saves him from all danger: after reuniting his warriors, Phaon succeeds in deposing Melanchrus and kills Hyperbius in a duel. Returning to Mytilene, he marries his beloved Sappho.
