After Silke falls from a bridge into the Havel, her distant sister Moni arrives in Potsdam and tries to find who was responsible.

The story

When Silke is pushed from a bridge into the Havel, her sister Moni travels from Mallorca to Potsdam to look after her. The sisters are not close, and Silke, only slightly injured, does not want help. Police do little while a child is missing in town. After Moni receives a threatening letter, she tries to find the person responsible and eventually locates a man named René in a neighboring building. She persuades Silke to join her in confronting him and making clear that he must leave Silke alone.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film is divided into three chapters, each showing events from the perspective of one of the three protagonists. The actual sequence of events only becomes clear to the viewer after all three chapters have been seen. Chapter I (Moni): After an unknown person pushes Silke off a bridge into the Havel, her sister Moni, who lives in Mallorca, promptly flies to Potsdam to look after her younger sister. The sisters are not particularly close. Silke is only slightly injured and does not want any help. The police do only the bare minimum, especially since a child has just gone missing in town. After receiving a threatening letter, Moni tries to find the perpetrator. She eventually tracks him down in a neighboring building: a certain René. After making the necessary preparations, she persuades Silke to go with her and make it clear through threats that he is to leave Silke alone. The sisters then attend a friend’s wedding. Chapter II (René): René is a police officer and takes part in the search for the missing child. During a lunch break, as he crosses the bridge, he pushes Silke into the water and runs away. He cannot explain why he did it, and talks to colleagues and his ex-girlfriend in an attempt to understand himself. He eventually visits Silke at her workplace at the ship lift, apologizes profusely, and says he wants to make things right. Later, the sisters visit him to make it clear that he is to leave Silke alone. He quickly leaves his colleague’s wedding because the two women are there too. Outside, he beats up a man and carries him back to the wedding, injured. It becomes clear that the man is the child abductor shown in the police sketches. Chapter III (Silke): Silke is in a relationship that is not going particularly well with a man who is living separately. When she sees a piece of clothing floating in the water from the bridge, she leans over the railing, is pushed, and falls into the water. When Moni comes to see her, things are strained at first between the very different sisters, and accusations fly, until Moni gets drunk. Silke realizes that Moni really needs to play the role of her protector right now. Moni has lost her job in Spain, and things are not going well with men either. So Silke asks René to play along: to write a threatening letter, wound her, and prepare for the sisters’ visit. At the wedding, René says that Silke made most of it up and that he played along with the story. Silke admits to the other two that she jumped off the bridge and that René had tried to stop her. If she had not jumped, Moni would not have come back. When asked why they should believe her now, Silke replies: “What else can we do?”
