A womanizer’s tangled romantic deceptions face exposure when his wealthy aunt arrives to inspect his life in Spain.
The story
In sunny Spain, Amadeo lives lavishly on money sent by his wealthy aunt Edith in America, while concealing how little he deserves her trust. Just before his wedding, he leaves Berta, a singer who leads a dance band, waiting in her wedding dress. Furious, she swears revenge. Amadeo, meanwhile, hides and plans to marry Dolores. His schemes grow precarious when Edith announces a visit to find out what her nephew is doing with her money. To explain his requests, Amadeo has claimed he needs funds for his brother Albert, an air force officer whose respectable character is the opposite of his own.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The story takes place in sunny Spain. Amadeo is a real womanizer who throws money around with both hands—money he doesn’t actually own, but merely receives from his wealthy Black aunt Edith in America. On top of that, Amadeo is a true good-for-nothing and scoundrel: he leaves his fiancée Berta, a singer and leader of a dance band, waiting for him in her wedding dress just before their wedding. As expected, Berta is furious, swears bitter revenge, and takes out her frustration first on Amadeo’s servant Blas, who gets a thorough beating for Amadeo’s misconduct. Amadeo, meanwhile, has gone into hiding, and since he is a habitual womanizer who can’t keep his hands off women, he is already planning his next wedding, this time to the beautiful Dolores. Then he learns that his inexhaustible source of money, Aunt Edith, has announced a visit to check up on him, since the old lady wants to know what her nephew Amadeo is up to in far-off Spain at her expense. Amadeo’s web of lies is about to collapse: he is not only a heartbreaker and philanderer, but also a notorious trickster. Each time, Amadeo had written to his aunt that he needed the money for his wayward brother Albert. But Albert is really the complete opposite: impeccably behaved, solid and dependable, and an air force officer who, unlike Amadeo, doesn’t simply drift through life. At Amadeo’s country estate, the “showdown” finally takes place after everyone involved—including his pal José Luis and two other women, but not Albert—has arrived. While Amadeo tries to keep up his double game in front of Aunt Edith, the moment has now come for Berta to take revenge on her dissolute former fiancé. In front of Edith and everyone else, she insists that she really is Amadeo’s wife. Aunt Edith finds nothing to fault in this spirited, musical young woman and is delighted for her nephew Amadeo, who had feared that his whole scam would now be exposed and that he would face a terrible dressing-down. Reluctantly, he has to play along with Berta’s act to keep Aunt Edith calm. Then his actual new bride, Dolores, turns up at the estate. Amadeo thinks quickly and averts disaster by claiming that Dolores is Albert’s wife. But Aunt Edith doesn’t seem entirely convinced. Help arrives in the form of Berta’s dance band, which turns up led by a beautiful but unnamed blonde singer. However, disaster begins to unfold when the last person in the game, his airman brother Albert, arrives at the estate in a small sport plane. Of course, he has no idea that Amadeo has meanwhile “married” him off to Dolores. At the last moment, Amadeo makes sure Albert doesn’t let the truth slip. That evening, a huge party is held at the estate, where the blonde singer entertains everyone wonderfully. In the end, everything turns out happily: Amadeo stays with Dolores, Albert takes a liking to Berta, and even Aunt Edith finds her sweetheart in the womanizing José Luis, who had always been looking for a wealthy wife.
