A chance encounter on a crowded tram sparks an immediate attraction between a local reporter and a photographer, each with a spouse at home.

The story

On a crowded tram, local reporter Martin and photographer Lena lock eyes and are immediately smitten. Martin follows Lena to a swimming pool; afterward, they have sex on the neighboring basketball court without exchanging a word, names, or phone numbers. They return to separate households: Martin’s emotionally unstable wife, Solveig, is at dinner with her unannounced parents, while Lena’s soccer-mad husband offers a few kind words. A freelance photographer with a teenage daughter, Lena seems resigned to daily life. Martin is a successful journalist, and Solveig’s urgent wish for a child has become an excessive appetite for sex that he reluctantly indulges.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

On a crowded tram, the eyes of local reporter Martin and photographer Lena meet—and they are both smitten. Martin follows Lena to the swimming pool. Afterwards, on the basketball court next door, they finally have sex without much ado. Not a word is exchanged. Then each goes their own way, without exchanging names or phone numbers. At home, Martin’s emotionally unstable wife is waiting for him at the dinner table with her parents, who have turned up unannounced; at Lena’s, her soccer-mad husband murmurs a few kind words. Lena works as a freelance photographer, has a teenage daughter with the laborer Bodo, and seems to have resigned herself to the dreariness of everyday life. Martin is a successful journalist, married to Solveig, whose urgent desire for a child has turned into an excessive appetite for sex, which Martin now only reluctantly indulges. Later, Lena and Martin run into each other by chance in a department store. After a passionate exchange of kisses in the elevator, they arrange to meet again. They meet in a hotel room to give free rein to their obsession with each other. This later turns into a several-day stay by the sea. For both of them, the relationship puts their lives as they have known them to the test. For Lena, it increasingly becomes a serious matter, and the prospect of making a fresh start with Martin becomes tangible. For Martin, the relationship is at first an adventure, an escape from routine. But he, too, longs to break away from his marriage and move from the provinces to Berlin. Solveig discovers that her husband is having an affair but says nothing. Instead, she pretends to Martin that she is pregnant, which brings particular joy to her parents. Martin also seems pleased. At the same time, he seriously asks Lena whether she will leave with him, and she says yes. Lena and Bodo are now living apart, after Lena confessed her affair to him. Solveig’s parents give the young couple a spacious apartment for their future together with the child, who is now, after all, on the way. Martin no longer leaves his wife, and Lena is left alone.
