Three out-of-work actors take jobs at an inn, where new arrivals and romantic entanglements threaten to complicate their prospects for happiness.
The story
Out of work, actors Heinz Doll, Toni Mack, and Hans Stiegler answer an advertisement for a waiter, porter, and liftboy at the inn Zum blauen Enzian. Though the jobs are unfamiliar, they please their employer, Theres Stolzinger. Romance seems possible for Hans, who receives loving glances from chambermaid Vroni, and for Toni, whose hunger is often met by the cook Walpurga. Heinz’s charm catches the landlady’s attention, though Dr. Elz is already her persistent admirer. The arrival of Theres’s pretty stepdaughter Annemarie, fresh from hotel school, upsets the emotional balance at the inn and makes a happy ending seem uncertain.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Since the three actors Heinz Doll, Toni Mack, and Hans Stiegler are out of work, they respond to an advertisement seeking a waiter, a porter, and a liftboy for the inn “Zum blauen Enzian.” Heinz, Toni, and Hans carry out their unfamiliar duties to the satisfaction of their employer, Theres Stolzinger. Private happiness also seems to be in store for liftboy Hans and food runner Toni: the chambermaid Vroni gives Hans loving glances, and the cook Walpurga always has something to eat on hand for hungry Toni. Waiter Heinz’s charm also works on the beautiful landlady. But she already has a persistent admirer in Dr. Elz. Then Annemarie, the landlady’s pretty stepdaughter, arrives at the inn from hotel school, throwing everyone’s feelings into considerable confusion, and a happy ending seems almost impossible. It is only during a shared trip up the Grossglockner by Heinz and Annemarie that the two realize what they feel for each other.
