The story

A stranger arrives in Stockholm from Liquidatzia, a dictatorship, while refugees from occupied areas are living in Sweden. At a wedding gathering, young forensic chemist Vera hears from Police Commissioner Björn Almkvist, her former partner, that a refugee has died by suicide after threats from Liquidatzian agents. Vera confides her own fears to him. That evening, she returns to her hotel room and finds the stranger waiting: Atkä Natas, the man she married to protect her parents. He tells her that he denounced them and that they have been deported, while carrying secret information about the dictatorship’s agents and political situation.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

A stranger arrives in Stockholm by plane from the dictatorship of Liquidatzia. From his hotel room, he tries to reach the military attaché at the American embassy by phone but cannot get through. Refugees from areas occupied by Liquidatzia are staying in Sweden. A group has gathered to celebrate a wedding. Among those attending is Vera, a young forensic chemist. While the party is underway, Swedish Police Commissioner Björn Almkvist arrives and tells Vera that one of the refugees, a woman, has committed suicide as a result of threats made against her by Liquidatzian agents in Sweden. Vera, who was once in a relationship with Almkvist, confides her own fears to him. When Vera returns to her hotel room that evening, the stranger is sitting there. He is Atkä Natas, morally debased by his wartime experiences and just as willing to do the bidding of those in power in order to survive. Among other things, he served as a camp commandant and had thousands of people executed. Vera married Natas to protect her parents, but Atkä tells her that he denounced them. They have since been deported. Atkä has brought secret information about the dictatorship’s agents and the political situation in the country so that, if necessary, he can defect to the West. He keeps the documents in a briefcase. Nothing now binds Vera to Natas. During the night, she injects him in the back of the neck with an anesthetic, takes the secret documents, and sends them to the police. A district doctor at the hotel for a graduation celebration declares the man dead, possibly murdered. Liquidatzian agents break into the hotel room and take away the “body.” Natas is in fact only anesthetized. When he comes to, he is tortured until he confesses that he has lost the secret documents and reveals what they contain. He is ordered to retrieve the briefcase and help neutralize Vera. Almkvist’s feelings for Vera have been rekindled. Instead of arresting her for murder, he takes her to his home in a suburb. Natas suddenly appears there and, by a ruse, manages to take both the police service pistol and the briefcase from the officer. The agents, who have been following Natas, force their way in, beat Almkvist, and drive off with Vera in their car. Dazed, Almkvist tries to make his way into town. Upset homeowners see his erratic driving as a case of drunk driving. In an unguarded moment, Natas manages to escape from the agents’ car with the briefcase, but they are soon on his heels. Trapped on the pedestrian walkway of the Katarina Lift, he chooses to throw himself down rather than be captured. Almkvist remembers the name of a boat the agents had mentioned: MROFNIMOK GADYN. A large police force gathers in the harbor, and the boat is searched under Almkvist’s direction. Thanks to a small dog, Vera is found lying bound and covered in bandages at the bottom of a lifeboat. Over the captain’s protests, Björn takes Vera back to Sweden, citing the fact that she is suspected of attempted murder.
