Full plot (contains spoilers)
A traveling peddler manages to become a prosperous farmer, but he is a man constantly tormented by his obsessions and suspicions. Paulo Honório, a man from the backlands of humble origins and determined to rise socially, makes a fortune as a traveling salesman and moneylender. Through a financial maneuver, he takes over the declining São Bernardo estate, a traditional farm in the municipality of Viçosa, Alagoas. He restores the farm, expands its cultivation, introduces machinery for processing cotton, and becomes part of local society. Wanting an heir to one day take over the fruits of his capital accumulation, he enters into a marriage contract with Madalena, the town’s schoolteacher. The marriage is consummated, but their differences gradually become more pronounced.
