When an escaped convict takes a prosecutor’s son hostage, Sarah Kohr must find her long-lost first love to save him.

The story

After 19 years in prison, life-sentenced criminal Lorenz Degen escapes. Sarah Kohr fears he may seek revenge: she testified against him as a key witness when she was a street child. Their first encounter amounts only to a clash with Degen’s henchmen, but Degen targets prosecutor Anton Mehringer’s 12-year-old son, Hendrik, taking him hostage to force the handover of Axel Thal, Sarah’s first love. Degen wants the printing rollers for the first euro banknotes, which Thal acquired for him in a heist 20 years earlier and never handed over. To save Hendrik, Sarah must find Thal, starting with inquiries linked to the Wittgenstein Printing Works and Thal’s former best friend.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Lorenz Degen, a criminal sentenced to life imprisonment, escapes from prison after 19 years. Sarah Kohr cannot rule out that he will seek revenge on her, since she testified against Degen as a key witness when she was still a street child. Their first confrontation, however, amounts to no more than a clash with Degen’s henchmen. While prosecutor Anton Mehringer also expects to become the target of a revenge campaign, Degen focuses on his 12-year-old son, Hendrik. He takes the boy hostage and intends to use him to force the handover of Axel Thal, Sarah’s first love. The reason is the printing rollers for the first euro banknotes, which Thal had acquired for Degen during a heist 20 years earlier but had never handed over to him. Degen does not even hesitate to confront his adversary Mehringer at his home, to lend weight to his demands. Kohr now has to find Thal if she wants to save Hendrik. She begins her search where she lost track of Thal back then: after a break-in at the Wittgenstein Printing Works, she hopes to learn something through Thal’s best friend at the time. Her trip to the countryside brings a major surprise: she has already reached the end of her search. Thal has settled there under his friend’s identity and has enjoyed 20 years of peace. Kohr’s arrival puts his cover at risk, and, afraid that Degen might find him too, he shoots himself. The police officer takes the printing masters and returns to Hamburg. She sends word to Degen to await further instructions and informs Mehringer of her next steps. The handover is supposed to take place at the container port, but it does not go as planned. Degen takes the printing masters without releasing the boy. Although a police unit corners him shortly afterward, he does not reveal where the boy is hidden. Mehringer is thus caught in a personal conflict, as Degen demands his immediate release in exchange for returning the prosecutor’s son. Against regulations, he agrees, and a showdown ensues when Sarah Kohr arrives. She had discovered the hiding place by putting pressure on one of Degen’s associates. Terrified for his life, the man revealed the location of the bunkers Degen is using for his operation. Hendrik Mehringer is freed, and Lorenz Degen has to return to prison.
