The story

Alex recognizes his longtime manager and ex-wife, but not his younger wife, Maria.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Alexander is 48, a Schlager star, and has become quite arrogant. After a heart attack, he loses a large part of his memories of the past 10 years. In the music room of the rehabilitation clinic, Alexander meets Heinrich, an old jazz pianist who wants to enjoy the time he has left after suffering a stroke. Heinrich takes the increasingly unsettled Alex under his wing and soon wants to save his former club, the “Blue Note,” from closing, together with old friends: by putting on a performance with Alex. With charm and persistence, he wins Alex’s trust. Alex now recognizes only his longtime manager, Silvio, and his ex-wife, Edda, but not his younger wife, Maria, for whom he once left Edda and their son, Jan. Heinrich helps Alex navigate the challenges of life in rehab, deal with a car accident on the way to a rehearsal at the “Blue Note,” and, above all, untangle the complications in his personal life that arise after Alex repeatedly turns up uninvited at his former family’s home: Jan is deeply disappointed in his father, Edda wants revenge for being swindled in the divorce, and Maria, who had already struggled with Alex not recognizing her at first, eventually leaves him out of jealousy. Manager Silvio is also miffed. He fears he is being pushed aside when he hears from Maria about the new band project, but Alex soon manages to reassure him. In the end, Heinrich falls into a coma after another severe stroke and seems unlikely to recover. Alex, increasingly recovered from his former arrogance and his memory problems, finally puts his personal life in order and, out of gratitude to Heinrich, pushes ahead with the concert at the “Blue Note” despite Silvio’s concerns about the image. The concert is broadcast live on the radio, and Nurse Laura plays it for Heinrich at his bedside. The music finally rouses him; he smokes a cigarette with Laura, contentedly, and in the closing scene gives the audience a knowing wink as he bids them farewell.
