A woman seeking to make amends for her family’s past falls for a man whose false claim of Jewish identity spirals into a web of lies.

The story

Anne Braun, a young non-Jewish woman passionate about Judaism, specializes in Jewish literature at her bookstore and volunteers at a Jewish retirement home. She feels responsible for making amends because her grandparents profited from valuables taken from Jewish neighbors during the Second World War, while her parents inherited the family’s art and antiques business without questioning its origins. Anne also longs for a Jewish boyfriend. At a party, gynecologist Daniel pretends to be Jewish to impress her. The two become a couple, but his initial deception leads to an expanding web of lies, as Daniel hopes Anne will eventually love him for who he really is.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Anne Braun is a young non-Jewish woman who is passionate about Judaism and specializes in Jewish literature at her bookstore. She also volunteers at a Jewish retirement home and supports the Jewish author Schlomo Wisniewski. During the Second World War, Anne’s grandparents grew rich by trading in valuables belonging to their Jewish neighbors, while Anne’s parents took over the art and antiques business without questioning where their inherited wealth came from. Anne therefore feels it is her duty to work off her family’s bad karma and wants to make amends. Anne also desperately wants a Jewish boyfriend. To impress her, the young gynecologist Daniel pretends to be Jewish at a party with Anne’s friend Laura and his best friend and Jewish fellow doctor, Tobias. Anne and Daniel become a couple. Daniel’s little deception grows into a web of white lies that he can no longer escape. He hopes that in the end Anne will love him for who he is. In one of his books, Schlomo Wisniewski wrote about his memories, claiming that he had survived a concentration camp as a child. However, Tobias discovers that at least part of the book is based on the memories of his great-aunt, which Wisniewski had copied from her. It also turns out that, like Daniel, Wisniewski is not Jewish either, grew up in an orphanage in Switzerland, and was never in a concentration camp. Daniel eventually admits to Anne that he is not Jewish. At first, Anne is deeply disappointed. After Daniel apologizes to Anne for lying and tells her that he loves her, she forgives him. The two become parents to a child.
