When strange damage appears at a university, a young detective continues an investigation the police have dismissed as a student prank.
The story
At the University of Stuttgart, scratched swastikas appear on windows and mirrors, and glass panes shatter. Police dismiss the incident as a student prank, but young detective Bernau continues investigating after learning of a similar incident in a neighboring university building 13 years earlier. His inquiries bring him to Professor Angerer, a parapsychologist from Freiburg, and Angerer's students Marion and Oliver, who investigate paranormal phenomena with specialized equipment. In the university basement, Bernau encounters the ghost of a young girl. During the group's electronic monitoring of the building, a power surge causes a monitor to explode and seriously injures Oliver. The investigators wonder why the spirit is hostile, and Angerer brings in a medium to make contact with it.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
At the University of Stuttgart, scratched swastikas appear on windows and mirrors, and panes of glass shatter. The police dismiss the incident as a student prank and discontinue their investigation. But the young detective Bernau continues investigating, especially since a similar incident occurred in a neighboring university building 13 years earlier. Bernau meets Professor Angerer, a parapsychologist from the University of Freiburg, and his two students, Marion and Oliver. Using a kind of ghost detector and infrared lamps, they investigate so-called entities and paranormal apparitions. In the university basement, Bernau encounters the ghost of a girl about seven or eight years old, which initially unnerves him. Professor Angerer is fascinated, since he himself has never experienced more than sounds and flashes of light. The group electronically monitors the university building when power surges occur and Oliver is seriously injured by an exploding monitor. Bernau is the only one who escapes injury. The group wonders why the ghost girl is aggressive. Angerer brings in the deaf medium Morgana Le Fey, who makes contact with the spirit. It turns out that the ghost is actually two twins, one of whom is evil. She attacks the group and strangles Marion, but Bernau manages to save her. Since ghosts are usually bound to a place, an object, or a person, the group thinks of someone who was present both during the current incident and the one 13 years earlier: 89-year-old Carla Klüver, who financially supports the university. Morgana Le Fey provides clues about the lives of the dead twins. They were Roma who were subjected to medical experiments during the Third Reich. Their organs and blood were taken and kept for later research. Some samples were also stored at the University of Stuttgart, but neither their names nor the numbers assigned to them by the Nazi doctors are known. Bernau therefore plans to be put into suspended animation so that, during a near-death experience, he can contact the girls and learn the name. As a ghost, Bernau follows one of the girls and encounters his dead brother, who was beaten to death by burglars as a child about thirty years earlier, before Bernau had a chance to say goodbye to him. Bernau is glad to have seen his brother once more and remembers his mission. He finds the girl and the number tattooed on her arm. Angerer and Marion bring Bernau back to life. The twins’ stored organs are found in the university basement. Carla Klüver is arrested because in 1943 she was an assistant to the doctors who carried out the experiments on the girls, and was therefore complicit in their deaths. The twins’ remains are buried.
