Olaf Schubert has grand plans to improve the world, from fighting racism to writing musicals against hunger and working as a social worker, but makes little progress. His father presses him to get his life in order and produce a child so the family line will continue. When his father suffers a heart attack, Olaf tries to change. His first dates with women fail, until he meets Pamela, a biologist who sees something affectionate in the daydreamer. Yet Olaf repeatedly puts his foot in it with her, while also trying to move his musical forward.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Olaf Schubert tries to make the world a better place, whether by fighting racism, writing musicals to combat hunger, or working as a social worker. But he barely makes any progress with any of his plans. His father demands that he finally do something with his life and have a child, so the Schubert family line will not die out. It is only when his father suffers a heart attack that Olaf tries to change. His first dates with women are all unsuccessful. Then he meets Pamela, a biologist who sees something affectionate in the daydreamer, too. But Olaf puts his foot in it at every turn with her. Above all, he wants to move his musical forward. Eventually, he manages to put on a successful performance and win Pamela over as well. Nine months later, they have a daughter, after which Olaf’s father wishes for another son.
