Schwarzbrot in Thailand (2017)

Tanja and Ottmar, a retired couple, have handed their bakery over to their daughter and want to spend their retirement in the Thai seaside resort of Pattaya. While Tanja is interested in the local people and the country, Ottmar misses having work to do. In town, he meets Max, a German who suggests an interesting business venture: they could open a bakery specializing in German baked goods, and there is already an empty shop available. At a meeting, Max says the shop must be bought as soon as possible. Ottmar then signs a contract with a lawyer. When Ottmar wants to show his wife the shop, the keys do not fit the lock, and Max’s phone number is disconnected. By signing, Ottmar had given the fraudster Max power of attorney over his bank account; now his money is gone, and Ottmar despairs. His wife also distances herself from him. She no longer sees anything they have in common and follows a caregiver to a village in the jungle. Together with Becky, a woman who has dropped out of society, Ottmar follows her to that village. When Becky unexpectedly dies, a cremation ceremony is held. Lobinger, a former judge with dementia, remembers a clause stating that a person who is not related to the family may collect only 40,000 euros. A year later, the couple are happily together again, and Ottmar has taken a part-time job as a baker at a German beer garden in Pattaya.
