A young maid’s romance with Hans entwines with the unrequited affections of a choirmaster and a persistent suitor.
The story
Blasius Römer, an elderly cathedral choirmaster, is secretly and hopelessly in love with his young maid, Bärbele. Her affections, however, belong to the young Hans, who is also being pursued by Malwine von Hagenau. The relationships and rivalries come together on the Feast of Saint Cecilia, a day celebrated with music and dancing. Malwine follows Hans to the festivities, where a Berlin tourist named Schmußheim also appears, irritating those around him with his big mouth. As the gathering brings the romantic entanglements into sharper view, Blasius remains caught in his unrequited love for Bärbele.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Blasius Römer, an elderly cathedral choirmaster, falls in love once again—just as secretly and hopelessly—with his young maid, Bärbele. But she has fallen for the young Hans, whom the man-crazy Malwine von Hagenau is also pursuing. On the day of the Feast of Saint Cecilia, celebrated with music and dancing, Schmußheim also turns up, in addition to Malwine, who has followed Hans there. Schmußheim is a tourist from Berlin whose big mouth gets on everyone’s nerves. When Malwine realizes that Bärbele and Hans are committed to each other, she finds consolation with Hans’s friend Richard. Hans and Bärbele move to the city, while Blasius Römer is left alone and finds comfort in his church music.
