Full plot (contains spoilers)

Postwar Germany. Bum, the friend of the down-and-out Axel, can’t quite find his place in the economic boom of the new Federal Republic. “The soul is to blame for everything,” he complains to his friend while drunk. Axel suggests that he simply “think” his soul out into a shoebox. Bum then pawns the box for five marks, and with this start-up capital he begins a meteoric but completely soulless rise to become a business tycoon. He no longer thinks of his old friend Axel. After his death, however, Bum faces a problem: he cannot enter the afterlife because his soul is missing. He visits his old friend Axel as a ghost, and Axel eventually lets himself be persuaded to search for the shoebox containing the soul and set it free.
