Full plot (contains spoilers)

Susanne Eppstein runs the insolvent family bus company Toeplitz Reisen. To avoid bankruptcy, she wants to merge with her competitor, Max Thomas Wolf, so she can obtain a desperately needed bank loan. Her mother, Marianne Toeplitz, who has just returned from rehabilitation, is not at all supportive. At the same time, Susanne’s daughter Nellie comes home from boarding school, looking forward to a trip to Rimini with her boyfriend Julian. But Nellie learns that, because of her English grade, Susanne has booked her a stay in England instead. On impulse, Marianne, who fell in love with a young man named Giuseppe in Rimini when she was a young woman, and Nellie set off together for Rimini. Susanne and her ex-husband Jan, a doctor with a career opportunity in Chicago, spontaneously follow the two women. On the way, Marianne and Nellie befriend a group of American tourists. When they stay overnight at a hotel, Marianne runs into an old friend named Sepp, while Nellie meets the young Lucca. Calvin Baker, who is part of the tour group, offers to buy Marianne’s bus company. Sepp asks the two women to take Lucca to Lake Garda, where Lucca’s mother, Maria, is celebrating her birthday. Meanwhile, Susanne and Jan arrive at the hotel where Marianne and Nellie stayed, and Sepp tells them where the two women are headed. The family reunites at Maria’s birthday celebration. While Max Thomas merges with the competition without Susanne’s knowledge, Susanne decides to leave the company and look for a job. In Rimini, Susanne and Jan meet Giuseppe, Marianne’s former love and Lucca’s grandfather. Meanwhile, Nellie runs into Julian at a beach party; he now has a new girlfriend. Marianne and Giuseppe reminisce, while Jan considers trying again with Susanne. Marianne decides to move to Lake Garda with Giuseppe and leave the company to Susanne. Susanne is shocked to learn what Max Thomas has done behind her back. When she asks her mother for help, Marianne has to cancel the trip to Venice that she and Giuseppe once missed and had planned to make up for now. She puts together an offer for Calvin Baker that he cannot refuse. Afterwards, she collapses and has to go to the hospital. When she returns home, Giuseppe comes to visit. The two of them now make up for the missed trip to Venice. Jan goes into business for himself in Germany.
