Full plot (contains spoilers)
Children’s book author Marie Ruppert marries pilot Hubert Weißenthaler. Both her best friend Bebé and his hypochondriac mother, Leopoldine, are skeptical. Shortly afterward, Marie becomes pregnant. When Hubert’s father, Franzl, dies a little later, Leopoldine reacts with self-pity because Franzl had a female friend. According to rumors, the friend is Rosa Ratschnig, a florist and the mother of the local doctor, Georg Ratschnig. Leopoldine wants to sell Franzl’s childhood home, where she never felt comfortable, but Franzl’s wish was for his son to move back into the house. Despite warnings from Bebé and her parents, Marie enthusiastically moves into the house with Hubert. Leopoldine, who calls her son “Burli,” immediately starts interfering and manipulating him with her hypochondria. As relations between mother and daughter-in-law grow increasingly strained, Hubert, who is rarely home because he is a pilot, tries to calm Marie down. Rosa gives Marie Franzl’s will, in which he leaves the house and garden to Rosa and Georg; it turns out that Georg is Franzl’s son. A little later, when Marie goes into labor, Georg helps deliver her daughter, Francesca. When Hubert shows that he is overwhelmed by the situation, Marie throws him out and divorces him. Three years later, when Leopoldine wants to sell the house, Marie confronts her with what she knows about the will. Leopoldine has a breakdown and becomes dependent on care. Marie and Georg become a couple. In the film’s final scene, during a family outing, Leopoldine rolls down a grassy slope in her wheelchair after Francesca has released the brakes.
