The story
After Mr. Dashwood's estate passes to their half-brother John and his wife Fanny, the Dashwood sisters—Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret—are forced to contend with potential poverty. While the sisters navigate their new reality, Elinor develops a deep bond with Edward Ferrars, while Marianne becomes intrigued by the mysterious Colonel Brandon. When a move to a Devonshire cottage is arranged, the sisters must navigate the social expectations of their circle. Following the loss of their inheritance to their half-brother, the Dashwood sisters move to a cottage in Devonshire. Elinor develops a bond with Edward Ferrars, but he is secretly betrothed to the wealthy Lucy Steele. Meanwhile, Marianne is seduced and abandoned by the reckless John Willoughby, who later causes her to fall ill. In London, the truth of Edward's betrothal is revealed, and he is eventually disinherited for his moral stance. After a period of illness, Marianne is confronted by a desperate Willoughby. Following a series of complications involving the Ferrars family and the truth about Lucy's intentions, Elinor eventually finds happiness with Edward after he is freed from his previous obligations. The film concludes with the sisters navigating their romantic fates and the social realities of their lives.
