During the operation, he knocks over Adam Einmiller, a homeless man who has just taken 20 euros from Mrs. Schröder’s collection plate. Eddie loses his personal firearm to Adam, who hides it in a cemetery. Eddie then looks after Adam, who initially says he cannot remember the collision because he hit his head.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Munich police officer Eddie Kolozecik was a chief inspector in the narcotics unit, but after being demoted he is assigned to the beat. Hoping to return to the higher ranks, he works private extra shifts before his regular duty and, posing as an undercover plainclothes officer, sets a trap for two small-time dealers. In the process, he knocks over Adam Einmiller, a homeless man who had just stolen 20 euros from Mrs. Schröder’s collection plate. Eddie loses his personal firearm to Adam, who hides it in the cemetery. Eddie subsequently looks after Adam, who initially claims he cannot remember the collision because he hit his head. Eddie’s father, Erwin Kolozecik, died thirty years ago, and the cemetery administration wants to clear his grave. An extension does not seem worthwhile to Eddie’s mother, Maria, because Eddie has hardly ever visited the grave. The grave of Leopold Einmiller, Adam’s son, who also died thirty years ago, is to be cleared as well because Adam cannot pay the fee. According to Maria, Adam Einmiller was her former dentist, who closed his practice after an accident. At the time, Maria had assumed he had emigrated to Canada to go fly-fishing. Because Eddie did not turn in the drugs he had confiscated from the small-time dealers at the unit until the following day, the two have to be released. Eddie’s partner Carlo Reitner, who was transferred to a less desirable post along with him, asks his superior, Frau Wedig, for early retirement, but she talks him out of it on the condition that she assigns him a new partner. Eddie gets some fly-fishing gear and asks Adam, who used to fish with his son, to teach him. Eddie has moved back in with his mother, who has not left the house for three years because of an anxiety disorder. He begins a romantic relationship with Mrs. Schröder, a homeless woman, much to Maria’s displeasure, and this leads Eddie and Mrs. Schröder to fall out. From Amalia, the pawnbroker, Eddie learns that Adam tried to turn his gun into cash. While Eddie and Adam are fly-fishing together, the current sweeps Eddie away. After Adam pulls Eddie out of the water, he drives off in Eddie’s vehicle. Worried that Adam may want to take his own life with the gun, Eddie asks his mother to leave the apartment and look for Adam at the cemetery, by his family’s grave. Adam and Maria meet at the cemetery. There, he tells her about the accident while putting up the maypole, in which three people were crushed to death, including his son, whose death he blames himself for. Eddie eventually makes up with Mrs. Schröder.
