A nerdy TSA agent finds himself in a relationship with a woman he believes is far out of his league.

The story

Kirk Kettner is a TSA agent at Pittsburgh International Airport who finds himself in a complicated situation when he tries to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend, Marnie. His life takes a turn when he meets Molly McCleish, a successful and attractive woman who is the only person he treats professionally during a stressful situation at the airport. After a series of chance encounters at a local museum and a hockey game, the two begin a relationship. However, Kirk's friends warn him that their vastly different appearances make the relationship doomed to fail, creating a conflict between his feelings for Molly and his own insecurities about their social standing.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Kirk Kettner, a TSA agent in Pittsburgh, begins a relationship with Molly McCleish, a successful woman who is much more conventionally attractive than him. While their initial meetings at a museum and a hockey game lead to a budding romance, Kirk's friend Stainer warns him that the 'numerical chasm' between them makes the relationship unsustainable. After a series of dates and a complicated encounter involving Molly's parents, Kirk becomes insecure about his status in her life, especially when her ex-boyfriend, a pilot, reappears. Kirk eventually breaks up with Molly, believing she is too good for him, and returns to his ex, Marnie. However, after a series of misunderstandings and a dramatic intervention by Stainer, Kirk realizes his insecurities were misplaced. He reconciles with Molly and eventually fulfills his dream of becoming a pilot, surprising her with a trip to Cleveland.
