Two reporters risk their careers to expose a powerful Hollywood producer's history of sexual misconduct.
The story
In 2017, New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor receives a tip that actress Rose McGowan was sexually assaulted by Indiewood producer Harvey Weinstein. After McGowan initially declines to comment but later describes the encounter, Kantor begins a difficult investigation. Frustrated by a lack of progress and the fear of career blowback from other actresses who describe similar experiences but refuse to be named, Kantor recruits Megan Twohey to help with the piece. The two journalists begin the arduous process of tracking down former assistants and confronting former executives to uncover the truth behind the settlements and the systematic abuse.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 2017, New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor receives a tip that actress Rose McGowan was sexually assaulted by Indiewood producer Harvey Weinstein. After McGowan eventually describes the rape, Kantor begins an investigation. She speaks with actresses Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow, who describe their own experiences but fear career blowback. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Kantor recruits Megan Twohey. Twohey tracks down a former Miramax assistant who refuses to speak due to an NDA, and Kantor confronts a former Miramax CFO who is hesitant to divulge settlement information. Twohey is rejected by the EEOC but learns from Linda Fairstein about Weinstein's social connections with the DA's office. Kantor receives tips about three former assistants—Rowena Chiu, Zelda Perkins, and Laura Madden—and confronts them individually. While some remain silent, others eventually speak. Weinstein attempts to appease reporters through a lawyer but denies wrongdoing. After Kantor receives an internal memo from an accountant detailing abuse allegations, the Times notifies the Weinstein Company board. Weinstein eventually releases a statement acknowledging he caused pain and takes a leave of absence. Despite initial refusals, Judd and Madden eventually agree to be named. The Times publishes the story on October 5, 2017, leading to 82 women coming forward with allegations, workplace reforms, and Weinstein's eventual 23-year sentence.
