A student and a waitress are drawn together despite the unhappy circumstances and fears that threaten their relationship.
The story
Student Tetsuro meets Shino, a waitress at the third-rate Shinobugawa restaurant. They are drawn to each other, but each faces difficulties that make love seem uncertain. Tetsuro believes an inherited doom hangs over his family, marked by suicide, unexplained deaths, and incurable illnesses among loved ones, and fears that he could bring misfortune to Shino. Shino’s poverty and her father’s illness make it difficult for her to break with Motamura, a successful man she does not love. As Tetsuro and Shino grow closer, they must confront fear, obligation, and the possibility of choosing a different future.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The student Tetsuro meets Shino at the third-rate Shinobugawa restaurant, where she works as a waitress. The young people are drawn to each other, but both are bound by unhappy circumstances. Tetsuro believes that some kind of inherited doom hangs over his family—suicide, unexplained deaths, and incurable illnesses among loved ones—and is afraid of bringing misfortune to this beautiful, pure-hearted young woman. Shino, because of her poverty and her father’s illness, cannot bring herself to break things off with Motamura, whom she does not love but who is successful in life. Love slowly overcomes their fear and uncertainty. Meeting Tetsuro changes Shino’s life. The young couple undergo a spiritual rebirth. Tetsuro visits Shino’s dying father and meets her brother and sisters. Then he and Shino travel north to the snowy region where his parents live, and there the lovers celebrate a modest wedding.
