The story
In New York City, Sofia Lin, a couples counselor/sex therapist, struggles with her inability to achieve orgasm while married to the unambitious Rob. After a tense consultation with a couple consisting of former child star Jamie and former sex worker James, Sofia is introduced to 'Shortbus,' a weekly artistic and sexual salon in Brooklyn hosted by drag artist Justin Bond. As Sofia begins to explore new experiences and friendships, including a connection with a dominatrix named Severin, her personal life becomes increasingly complicated. Meanwhile, James and Jamie navigate their own complex sexual dynamics and relationships with others, all while being observed by a nearby stalker.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sofia Lin, a sex therapist, struggles with her 'pre-orgasmic' status in her marriage to Rob. After meeting Jamie and James, she begins attending 'Shortbus,' a Brooklyn salon hosted by Justin Bond. Sofia forms a bond with a dominatrix named Severin, who helps her loosen up sexually, while Rob joins her at the salon. James and Jamie begin a relationship with Ceth, which is monitored by their stalker neighbor, Caleb. Caleb eventually confronts Ceth at Shortbus. James, struggling with his identity, attempts suicide but is saved by Caleb. Following this, James allows Caleb to penetrate him for the first time. The film depicts various sexual encounters, including Rob being flogged by Severin. During a city-wide blackout caused by the collective frustration of the characters, the group gathers at Shortbus. Sofia eventually achieves an orgasm during a threesome with a couple named Nick and Leah as the power returns to New York.
