Full plot (contains spoilers)
After a demanding period at her architecture firm, Sibylle finds it difficult to relax during a family vacation at Lake Garda with her husband, Jan, and their sons, David and Luca. While her family is still asleep, Sibylle takes long walks along the cliffs above the lake. She barely notices a woman of her own age whom she encounters there every day—until one morning, when she witnesses the woman’s suicide. Back in Munich, Sibylle tries in vain to put the incident out of her mind. Strange parallels repeatedly seem to point to a connection between her own fate and the woman’s. She is troubled by a growing estrangement from her family and by nightmarish visions that intrude into her everyday life. Suspecting burnout, her doctors prescribe a strict break from work. Largely isolated, she tries to regain control of her life and reconnect with her family, but soon has to realize that they now seem almost hostile toward her.
