The story
Cheerful student Lena believes in luck and the goodness of people. As part of a social project, she takes a course as a writing instructor, with just one participant: Hugo Drowak, a hateful and frequently drinking misanthrope who has given up hope that his life can change. A former homeless man living alone in a run-down high-rise, Drowak once wrote love poems every day. Unresolved events from his past have left him doubtful and self-pitying, and he resists Lena’s efforts to draw him back into creative writing. Still, Lena keeps trying to help him engage with the creative process.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The cheerful student Lena firmly believes in luck and in the goodness of people. As part of a social project, she takes on a course as a writing instructor. Her only participant is Hugo Drowak, a hateful, constantly drinking misanthrope. He has given up hope that anything in his life will ever change. The former homeless man lives alone in a run-down high-rise. As a young man, Drowak wrote poems about love every day, but unresolved events from his past cause him to fall into doubt and self-pity. He turns to alcohol, which destroys his relationship with his beloved and ends in him giving up on himself. Despite Drowak’s constant nastiness and resistance, Lena does not give up trying to get him interested in the creative process again. The film brings together the themes of love and self-love, being closed off by trauma, fear of failure and abandonment, and a longing for clarity and understanding.
