The story
On the eve of her fifteenth birthday, Lilli Fischer argues with her mother, feeling misunderstood by her family. She and her friend Bille Seifert then disappear from the garden shed where they planned to celebrate. Their parents are left in anxious uncertainty, and the police are called in; Inspector Frieden takes charge. At first, the girls are thought to have run away because of disputes with their parents, while money missing from Mrs. Fischer’s wallet adds to the suspicion that they left home.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Lilli Fischer and Bille Seifert are friends. After an argument with her mother on the eve of her 15th birthday, Lilli, who feels misunderstood by her family, and her friend disappear from a garden shed where they had planned to celebrate the birthday. For the parents, Henry and Marlis Fischer, and Katja Seifert and her husband, who runs an inn, a terrible period of uncertainty and anxious waiting begins. The police are called in, and Inspector Frieden takes charge of the case. At first, it is assumed that Lilli and her friend ran away from home because of their disputes with their parents. One factor contributing to this suspicion is that 200 euros are initially found to be missing from Mrs. Fischer’s wallet. As time passes, Henry Fischer is suspected of having a sexual relationship with his daughter’s friend—traces of semen in the garden shed and his absence during the night of the disappearance seem to support this theory. The Fischers’ marriage is on the verge of collapse. Later, it becomes clear that Henry had been having a sexual relationship with Bille’s mother, Katja, and that there was a case of mistaken identity because mother and daughter look very much alike. The only person Marlis can bring herself to trust is Inspector Frieden. Klaus Kuhnke, an outsider who lives in the village, also comes under suspicion and is linked to a possible crime—especially since a similar incident had occurred in the past. After some time, Lilli’s brother Kai breaks his silence; over the phone, he tells them about a note that Lilli and Bille left in the garden shed, which can explain their mysterious disappearance. The two girls ran away to Poland because Lilli had fallen in love with a Polish boy, the son of a man working illegally in the village, and wanted to follow him. After the girls are brought back, the families can be reunited.
