Full plot (contains spoilers)

Nike Hoffmann is 19 years old and an apprentice at the foreigners’ office in Hanover. Her mother died five years ago. Since then, she has lived alone with her father on his farm in the countryside around Hanover. The farm is on the verge of financial ruin. Nike’s father had decided to switch production to strawberries. During the harvest, he suffers a heart attack and is taken to hospital. Nike now has to take over the farm and is confronted with its dire financial situation and its illegal foreign workers. She befriends Milena, a Bosnian woman. At the foreigners’ office, Nike learns from the files that Milena is a fugitive. Suddenly, Nike is confronted with the reality of living illegally in Germany and finds herself at odds with Suse, her friend from her training program, who refuses to accept Milena as another friend of her best friend. Nike and Milena’s new friendship, meanwhile, is strained by Milena’s distrust; she trusts no one. Nike’s father is eventually discharged from hospital, but he remains weak. Nike has to accept that her father, too, has no understanding of the foreign workers’ problems and is equally distrustful. After Suse’s betrayal, the illegal workers are arrested in a raid; only Milena manages to escape in time. Nike hides her and then makes sure that the young woman receives the wages she is owed and can leave Hanover.
