He hopes to “thaw out a little,” stays with Grandma Oleńka, and takes a logging job. There he befriends fellow workers Peresada, Wasyluk, and young Batiuk, who are described as open, friendly, and sincere. The lumberjack community includes both boisterous, rough characters and reflective, conflicted people. As Janek spends time among them, he continues an inner dialogue with his beloved and reflects on their impossible love.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Janek Pradera—a poet and wanderer whose entire worldly wealth fits in a sack carried on his back—holes up in the depths of the Bieszczady forest after separating from his beloved, whom he calls Apple Tree Branch, so that, as he puts it, he can “thaw out a little.” He stays with Grandma Oleńka and takes a job logging. Pradera befriends the logging workers: Peresada, Wasyluk, and young Batiuk. They are open, friendly, and sincere. They spend time together after work. The community of lumberjacks is portrayed as divided between boisterous, rough characters (Peresada, Wasyluk, Bogdański, Kaziuk) and reflective, conflicted people (Pradera, Kątny). Amid the Bieszczady landscape, Janek also carries on an unceasing inner dialogue with his beloved. He reflects on an impossible love and is tormented by moral dilemmas, the joy of life, and the temptation of suicide.
