Full plot (contains spoilers)
While camping in the woods, Ruth and Harry experience a rift when Ruth rejects Harry's marriage proposal. After finding a dead deer covered in black substance, Ruth discovers a cave containing a blue puddle and a cocoon. She later pushes Harry off a cliff, only to realize he was replaced by an alien impostor who had absorbed his love for her. The alien, unable to kill Ruth due to this absorbed emotion, offers her a chance to escape Earth on its spacecraft. Ruth stabs the alien and lures it into water where a shark attacks. The alien eventually captures and cocoons Ruth, absorbing her personality but becoming incapacitated by her anxieties. Ruth escapes the cocoon, smashes the alien's head with a rock, and flees. As she drives away, she hears the alien's voice taunting her over the radio as multiple ships descend to begin an invasion.
