The story
In the city of Calatonia, Buster Moon, a koala and owner of a struggling theater, faces foreclosure by a bank representative. To save his business, he organizes a singing competition with a significant prize. However, a clerical error by his assistant, Miss Crawly, results in the prize being advertised as much larger than intended. As the competition begins, various animal contestants—each with their own personal struggles and fears—gather to perform. Buster must manage the chaos of the competition and the complications arising from the misprinted flyers while trying to keep his theater afloat and his contestants on track.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Buster Moon, a koala and theater owner in Calatonia, faces foreclosure and decides to host a singing competition. A typo by his assistant, Miss Crawly, mistakenly advertises a $100,000 prize instead of $1,000. The competition features diverse acts: Rosita (a mother of 25), Ash (a punk-rocker), Johnny (a gorilla trying to escape his criminal father's path), Mike (a street musician), and Gunter (a dancing pig). Meena, an elephant with a great voice, struggles with stage fright. As the competition progresses, the contestants face personal hurdles: Mike swindles bears, Johnny's relationship with his father is strained, and Rosita struggles with her identity. After a series of mishaps, including a collapsed stage and a theft attempt by Johnny, the theater is repossessed. However, Meena inspires Buster to perform outdoors. The show is a success, broadcast on local news, and eventually leads to the theater being rebuilt and reopened.
