A lounge singer forced into witness protection must navigate life in a convent while hiding from a dangerous mobster.

The story

Lounge singer Deloris Wilson, performing as Deloris Van Cartier in a club in Reno, Nevada, finds herself in danger after witnessing a murder by the club's owner, a gangster named Vince LaRocca. To protect her, the Reno Police Department places her in a witness protection program. She is taken to the struggling convent of Saint Katherine's Parish in a run-down San Francisco neighborhood. Disguised as 'Sister Mary Clarence', Deloris must adapt to the rigid life of the convent while keeping her identity secret from the mobsters who are searching for her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After witnessing a murder by mobster Vince LaRocca, lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier is placed in witness protection at the convent of Saint Katherine's in San Francisco. Disguised as 'Sister Mary Clarence', she initially struggles with the strict lifestyle but eventually joins the convent's struggling choir. Her musical expertise transforms the choir, leading to a surge in popularity and local attention. While the convent thrives, Vince's men search for her. Despite warnings from the police, Deloris stays to help her new friends. When a corrupt detective reveals her location, she is eventually kidnapped by Vince's men along with a fellow nun. She manages to help the other nun escape, and the convent sisters eventually rescue her. In a final confrontation at a casino, the men refuse to shoot her because she is dressed in a nun's habit. Vince is eventually arrested by the police. The film ends with the choir performing for a large audience, including the Pope, and Deloris continuing to lead the group as a touring musical act.
